How do you collaborate with clients to set goals and measure progress in therapy?

I love and appreciate feedback at any point during our work together and am so grateful when clients are open about their experiences in session. I also love and appreciate how absolutely difficult that can be, as I am quick to acknowledge the inherent power dynamics of being a client in this field. My goal is for us to readily check in as we go around what is working, what is not working, what we hope to steer away from, and what we hope to do next. My stance is that goals are more like guidelines that help us frame our work together and build momentum towards what you want (or even just establish what it is you really want in the first place!). We get to write and re-write them together as we go.
